5 ways to kickstart your Musical Career!
Getting your big break in the music industry is a big deal. It’s all about being at the right place at the right time. The biggest challenge musicians face these days is the herculean task of being noticed. Here are a few ideas to get you motivated and kick start your musical career.
1) Develop your sound
Figure out who you are as an artist. Are you a singer/songwriter? A solo act? A band? Under what genre would you categorise yourself? It’s important that you figure out the basics before you embark on your journey to musical stardom.
2) Find your team
The music business is challenging. Even the greatest of bands fall apart after spending decades together. To ensure that happens later rather than sooner, you need to find a team of like-minded people. When you’re starting out the last thing you need is to be arguing about your sound and genre or where you should be performing. Make sure you have a game plan, and your band mates are onboard with it.
3) Practice practice practice!
This should technically be Step 1. If you want to sing in front of people, first you need to be able to sing. And be good at it! Receiving praise and applause at a family get-together doesn’t count. Start by trying out different genres then make a note of your vocal range, singing styles that you enjoy performing, ones that come naturally to you and what wears out your voice.
Learning an instrument is always a bonus. Piano or guitars are usually go-to instruments. If you already play one, practice some more! Starting a music career with the ability to play one or more instruments has its benefits.
4) Get out there!
You need to step out and perform. Every audience is different and the more experience you get, the more confident you’ll get in your skills. Start out small – karaoke night, college events, or local bars. Start out small before you think of booking bigger gigs. It can be daunting at first, but don’t let that hold you back. Don’t be afraid to take a chance because you’re worried someone will shoot you down. Hearing “no” and getting rejected go hand-in-hand with starting a music career.
Another way to get noticed? Social media! Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and even Ed Sheeran were discovered via Youtube videos and Vines. Create your own website or upload your work on to one of several social platforms. This is a sure way of grabbing eyeballs and starting a music career.
5) Search for other opportunities
Don’t limit yourself to small venues in your city. Look for festivals or band contests in your hometown or someplace close-by. A lot of festivals feature local and up-and-coming artists. One such fest is Forum Rock On! Organized by FORUM, this music festival provides the perfect platform for artists to showcase their talents and win exciting prizes. The event is scheduled to be held in pan India across the FORUM malls of Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mysuru and Mangaluru.
Registrations are now open and go on until 20th March 2018. You can get all the details about the venue and contest rules here.
